UPDATE!!!!! SINGING BIRD LODGE NEEDS SCOUT HELP !!!!
At the December Roundtable meeting Julie Werthmann talked with the scouters present about the needs to improve Singing Bird lodge. Plans and resources are behind an effort to upgrade the the lodge both inside and out. What the lodge/park team lack is muscle and project leaders to help push the plans foward. This would be an excellent opportunity for a cub scout pack, troop or for an Eagle Scout pr0ject for service hours to help rejuvinate a great facility.
Here is the list of projects ‘on tap’ to be done that need help:
Inside projects:
- Wash all the windows and scrub up bottom of shades.
- In Pete Peterson’s Bird Room repair the blinds and shorten to match bottom window sill.
- Create wood storage box to keep wood off of floor. It should also be able to hold newspaper, rolling with large castors.
- Design shoe cleaning brushes for outside of main door.
- Clean and paint public broom closet, hang brooms, identify where brooms should go.
Outside projects:
- Remove soil up against wood siding.
- Add black tubing to downspouts to divert water away from building.
- Fix bent gutters.
- Add flagstone to front area to reduce mud.
- Add sidewalk from Bird Room door to parking lot.
- Make outdoor fireplace area usable and inviting to groups.
- Add wheelchair access ramp.
- Spray wash the outside of the building.
- Landscape and design water runoff for back exit door.
Funds are available for these projects in addition to help by calling Julie Werthmann at (309)721-6774 or emailing at juliemw@mchsi.com

Ever had a question about BSA and felt ‘silly’ asking it. You hear someone say something about Woodbadge, COPE or Venture scouting and dont have a clue as to what they were talking about? Well, here is your place to ask those questions and get feedback from the experts…
First Question:
My son does not swim. He frequently gets ear infections which has prevented him from learning how to swim. I have read that in the scout handbook that in order to advance he has to pass several levels of swimming proficency. We dont have a lot of free money right now to spend on swimming lessons. So should I just drop my son from scouting and pick another program for him to focus on? He loves scouting but not being able to swim seems to be a roadblock… What can we do??
What do the experts think??
The experts say this: Both you and your son should ask to meet with your Soutmaster. Discuss your situation and layout the facts. First and foremost, it is is possible to advance through scouting without knowing how to swim. So your scout does not have to leave the program. Your Scoutmaster will discuss options and come up with a plan to meet the requirements needed to advance. There will be opportunities at camp and other outings for your scout to become more comfortable with being in the water. Clearly if medical condition persists that would not allow any water activities then an execpetion would be made.
Margaret L. added the following comment:
On the swimming question, learning to swim is a life skill and I would think that teaching your son to swim, is something that you and your doctor would want for your boy. Ear plugs, medicines to dry out the ears,….don’t pass up a golden opportunity for you son to learn this life skill. I never learned to swim properly, I wish I had. And we all know that learning something as a child is so much easier than learning it as an adult.
QUESTION #2 Came from Heather N. who had this question:
Clean up day at LT was discussed during RT. Is this appropriate for Webelos? Also, what time is it?
Thank you
Lets see what the EXPERTs have to say??
Here is the response from Ben Rogers:
As far as Webelos being able to work at the chain saw day that would be fine. They would have to be big enough to pull tree branches and put them in piles. Some Webelos are as big as Scouts. Would have to be supervised by adults for sure.
